A veterinary technician is a professional trained to provide assistance to veterinarians in providing medical assistance to animals. Routine tasks of a veterinary technician usually involve conducting lab tests, administering of medications and assisting in dental and surgical procedures. In order to become a certified veterinary assistant , it is generally recommended to attend an AVMA or CVMA-accredited school. Whatever education and training a veterinary technician receives will play a vital role in the performance of his responsibilities. After acquiring his degree, an aspiring veterinary technician must pass a certification exam, which is usually based on state requirements. A veterinary technician can be referred to as certified, registered or licensed depending on the regulations sanctioned by his resident state. Choosing a particular field of specialization such as dentistry, cardiology and neurology is also possible for a veterinary technician. A veterinary technician usually works in animal clinics, although he can also work in government offices, research facilities and schools.
